Chrome Tab Groups Disappeared? How to Get Them Back

Most of the time the groups aren't gone — Chrome keeps a closed group instead of deleting it, it just isn't in the tab strip anymore. Check these places in order.

Look in the Tab groups menu

  1. Open More (the three dots, top right) › Tab groups.
  2. Your closed groups are listed there. Pick one to open all its tabs again.

Look in the bookmarks bar

  1. If the bookmarks bar is hidden, show it with Ctrl + Shift + B (Windows, Linux) or Command + Shift + B (Mac).
  2. Groups appear there when Show tab groups in bookmarks bar is on (Settings › Appearance).

Reopen what you just closed

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + T (Windows, Linux) or Command + Shift + T (Mac) to reopen recently closed tabs and windows, one at a time.

Missing on another computer?

  1. Make sure you are signed in to Chrome with the same Google Account on both computers.
  2. Turn on sync for history and tabs on both. Group changes are then saved and synced across devices.

Where Chrome's way stops

  • If the group was deleted with “Delete group”, it is removed on every device signed in to the account — there is no undo in Chrome.
  • Tabs that were never in a group can only come back from History, which a cleanup or “Clear browsing data” empties.
  • Restoring brings back the whole group; picking out the one page you needed means reopening all of it.

If you want single tabs to stay after you close them

Leap is a free Chrome sidebar where every tab you save stays put after you close it — sorted into spaces and folders, one click to open it again. It doesn't replace Chrome's tab groups; it sits next to them.
